Summer Reading

I just finished Steve Almond's and Julianna Baggott's WHICH BRINGS ME TO YOU, which is pretty fabulous and worth checking out...

And am now reading ONE OF A KIND, the biography of the doomed poker genius/gambling and drug adict Stu Ungar...what an amazing character...

Next...last year's STIFF by Mary Roach...

And a bunch of my student's fine work...

You?

Hi Rob,

Want you to know that Craig Clevenger (www.craigclevenger.com) turned me on to MORE THAN THEY COULD CHEW and I am glad he did. I am really enjoying this one.

I have a writerly question for you. Early on Maggot Arm Joe (!!) makes reference to Roebuck, of Sears/Roebuck fame. Not exactly an arcane reference, but you leave the reader to sort that one out. Then about a page later you decide to explain the PEANUTS character Pigpen. I'm arguing with a friend that this latter explanation is important because it crystallizes a visual image. Also, the Roebuck reference is delivered via dialogue, and Pigpen is delivered thru the narrative. Care to chime in on this (very superficial) argument?

At any rate, WE (no less than) LOVE THIS BOOK.

Please continue,

Rick-

let me know this gets to you?

first, THANKS for reading the book...always great to hear and i'm glad you're diggin it...

re, the Q: i think the reason one is explained and one is not is, you guessed it, because one is dialog. when dilog gets explained, it always seems clunky to me...and, yes, i wanted the visual (on teh pigpen)...though, looking at it again, i might skip THAT explanation as well, if i had to do it over.

Thanks, man-

got it, Rob.

and yeah, if we could only get the exact amount of do-overs that we need.

what a wonderful world this would be.

I am reading Chandler's THE BIG SLEEP, DeLillo's UNDERWORLD (which is a huge book, full up with great writing-you just can't read it in bed propped on your belly or you might lacerate your appendix-if you still have one-if not, you're good to go), something/anything by Dutch leonard, 12 DAYS ON THE ROAD: THE SEX PISTOLS AND AMERICA by Jimmy Guterman, and Tennessee Williams' COLLECTED STORIES. whew Rick
